When it comes to buying coconut oil, you should know that there are two types: virgin coconut oil and refined coconut oil. Let’s take a look at the main differences between them:
- Virgin coconut oil is made from fresh coconuts, it hasn’t been refined, and it’s certified organic and non-GMO. This type has the original coconut oil and flavor and can be heated up to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. During preparation, manufacturers scoop it from the shell and cold-press it and the final result is the oil.
- Refined coconut oil is made from dried coconut milk and it has been refined. Its flavor and oil are neutral and it can be heated up to 400 degrees. During preparation, this oil is steam-refined in order to obtain the neutral flavor.
Both of these coconut oils have their own nutritional value and you can choose the one whose preferences soothe you the most. They have 63% medium-chain fats each and 50% lauric acid. When buying coconut oil, make sure it’s certified organic and verified non-GMO coconut oil. If you opt for the refined one, make sure it has been steam-refined and chemical free. The virgin one shouldn’t be bleached or deodorized; and it needs to be cold-pressed and without hexane.
