A study led by Dr. Kalani Raphael by the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, has found that the levels of bicarbonate in your blood can actually predict longevity. The scientists analyzed 2,287 between the age of 70-79, over the course of 17 years . By the end of the study, half of the group had died of natural causes .

It was found that individuals with normal or high bicarbonate levels had a similar risk of dying during follow-up. But, the individuals with low bicarbonate levels had a 24% higher risk of premature death when compared with these groups.

Dr. Raphael Kalani said that they have found that healthy older people with low levels of sodium bicarbonate had a higher risk of death. He also said that by adding the pH measurement into the equation did not change the results, which is important because pH is not routinely measured.He added that low bicarbonate levels were also associated with age-related conditions such as osteoporosis, kidney disease, reduced muscle mass and strength, and kidney stones.

The researchers formed a theory that low bicarbonate levels might be an indicator of an underlying medical problem causing mortality.Testing blood levels of the chemical can help identify individuals at risk of early death in the future. These tests are used to diagnose kidney diseases, some lung diseases, and metabolic conditions .

HOW TO DRINK BAKING SODA?

By increasing your intake of foods that produce bicarbonate in the body, such as fruits and vegetables, you can also raise your bicarbonate levels.
